Zimbabwe’s number one goalkeeper, Donovan Bernard, is in high demand, with two prominent South African PSL clubs reportedly circling him.
The 28-year-old shot-stopper has been impressive for both club and country, attracting the attention of these DStv Premiership sides. He guarded goals in Zimbabwe’s opening two matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria.
After an impressive performance, Bernard was named man of the match in the goalless draw against Rwanda. The Warriors’ first-choice goalie was also outstanding in the 1-1 draw against Nigeria.
He is reportedly out of contract at the end of next month.
Polokwane City FC who recently returned to the SA PSL, are looking to bolster their squad with a reliable goalkeeper ahead of the January transfer window. They have identified Bernard as a potential target, impressed by his agility, shot-stopping abilities, and commanding presence in the box.
SuperSport United, on the other hand, are seeking to add depth to its goalkeeping department with its current first-choice keeper, Ricardo Goss, an on-loan Mamelodi Sundowns player.
Bernard’s experience and skillset have caught the eye of Matsatsantsa’s management, who view him as a potential long-term solution between the posts. Both Polokwane City and SuperSport United are expected to make formal inquiries about his availability in the coming weeks.
The player’s current club, Chicken Inn FC, are also keen on keeping him as a key member of their squad.
The Bulawayo side is expected to offer him a new deal ahead of the coming season, which starts in March 2024.
Bernard, who came close to signing for Venda Football Club last season, is flattered by the interest from these PSL clubs and is considering his options. He is reportedly seeking a move to the PSL.
