It has been reported that 45 000 Zimbabweans lined up to collect their e-passports this past December in a bid to avoid the price hike that is being introduced effective 1 January 2024. Ordinary passports which were $120 will now be $150 and emergency passports which were $200 will now be $250.
The Civil Registry Department typically records its highest number of applications in December, as this is when diasporans usually apply for new passports. This year however, has seen a record breaking number as most people were trying to avoid the impending price hike.
The RG said that the department was equipped with enough resources to supply everyone with a passport regardless of the enormous volumes. They also extended their working hours to deal with the numbers.
