The Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing their Strategic Plan which is set to expire in 2026. In a statement reflecting on the previous season, the ZGA expressed their satisfaction with achieving full compliance with local and international governing bodies for the sport of golf. This compliance includes meeting the requirements of the Sport and Recreation Commission.
The association highlighted their management practices, stating that they adhere to regulations set by the regulator. Having audited financial statements ensures that conducting business with the Zimbabwe Golf Association is low-risk. They also stated their intention to improve their brand presence and public approval through the implementation of a Marketing and Communication plan alongside the recently released 2024 National Calendar.
The ZGA reported that the 2023 golf season was eventful, with success achieved in various areas. They successfully organized national tournaments and introduced mixed events to promote gender equality in the sport. Several players from the association, including Cosmas Siyakobo and Lloyd Dube, achieved success in national tournaments that contribute to their World Amateur Golf Ranking.
“Our players were Cosmas Siyakobo from Kwekwe and Lloyd Dube from Gweru, among others. This was a milestone, as it is every amateur golfer’s dream to be on this platform, and the lower your ranking, the better,” said the statement. They also want to break the stereotype that golf is only for the affluent.
The Zimbabwean golfers participated in the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Golf Championships in Malawi in May, and won a silver medal. Zimbabwe also qualified for the World Amateur Team Championship which was held in October in Abu Dhabi. “We also participated in the All Africa Junior Team Championships, which were hosted by Uganda, and our girls did not disappoint, coming in second while the boys came in credible fifth,” said the association.
The association expressed the need for further development in golf and highlighted their efforts to implement their strategic plan with the support of various organizations and funding sources.
To enhance golfers’ performance, the ZGA has acquired a Flight Scope Machine, which utilizes technology and scientific approaches to improve player skills. The association aims to make regular use of the machine in 2024 to benefit all golfers in Zimbabwe.
