Nelson Chamisa announces his resignation from CCC, emphasizing focus on Zimbabwe, urging unity for total freedom and true change, promising updates on next steps, and expressing gratitude for support.
Nelson Chamisa, Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader, announced his resignation from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party on Thursday, citing infiltration and sabotage by the ruling ZANU PF. Chamisa, who contested President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the disputed 2023 election, stated that he can no longer be associated with the CCC, accusing it of being taken over by ZANU PF agents to undermine his legitimacy and derail his reform agenda.
In a statement, Chamisa declared, “This is to officially inform fellow citizens of Zimbabwe and the world that, with immediate effect, I am no longer part of CCC. As a patriot, I remain active in public service, a loyal citizen listener, freedom advocate, citizens’ champion, and leader. My focus remains on Zimbabwe, asserting your victory, honoring the citizens’ mandate, and God’s calling to provide leadership.”
Chamisa recounted facing numerous challenges since the formation of the CCC in 2021, including intimidation, violence, and attempts to disqualify his candidates. He criticized the 2023 election for irregularities, manipulations, and anomalies, claiming that an imposter had emerged within the CCC to destabilize the opposition. He also denounced Mnangagwa’s illegal methods and criminal strategies to consolidate authoritarian rule, resulting in economic collapse and social disorder.
Urging Zimbabweans to support calls for comprehensive political, electoral, and constitutional reforms, Chamisa urged them to reject the “contaminated” CCC, which he viewed as an extension of ZANU PF’s agenda. He called for the rallying of citizens behind fresh politics, new leaders who genuinely want to serve, and a rejection of those associated with fraud.
Chamisa expressed his commitment to public service and pledged to keep citizens informed about the next steps. He expressed hope for a “New Great Zimbabwe” that would restore democracy, dignity, and prosperity to the nation.
The departure of Chamisa from the CCC is expected to cause a division within the party, with some members following him to a new movement while others remain loyal to Tshabangu, the interim secretary general of the CCC. The split will also impact the opposition’s representation in parliament, requiring councilors and lawmakers to choose sides. The situation has led to speculation among insiders about the future dynamics of the party.
