Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp to Depart at the End of the Season. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has announced that he will be stepping down from his role at the end of the season, citing a lack of energy as the reason for his decision. Klopp, who took charge in October 2015 and signed a contract until 2026, has had a highly successful tenure at the club. Under his leadership, Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 and secured their first league title in 30 years in the 2019-20 season.
The 56-year-old Klopp revealed that he had informed the club of his decision back in November. While acknowledging that it may come as a shock to many, he expressed his deep love for the club, the city, the supporters, the team, and the staff. However, he emphasized that he had reached a point where he felt his energy levels were diminishing, and he could no longer continue in his role.
Klopp’s win percentage of 60.7% across all competitions is the highest of any Liverpool manager with 50 or more games in charge of the club. Since his appointment, Liverpool has accumulated 671 Premier League points, second only to Manchester City. Klopp shares the record for the longest winning run in the Premier League (18 consecutive victories) with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. Additionally, he boasts the second longest unbeaten Premier League run of 44 games.
During his tenure, Klopp achieved historic successes, becoming the only Liverpool manager to win the league title, European Cup\/Champions League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup with the club. The team clinched their sixth European Cup in 2019, followed by victories in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Most notably, they secured the Premier League title in the 2019-20 season.
While Liverpool failed to win major silverware last season, they are currently in contention for four trophies this term. Klopp’s announcement in November likely means that preparations for finding his successor have already begun. Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who currently manages Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, has emerged as an early favorite to take over, given his success and strong ties to the club.
