What comes to mind when you hear the words, ‘perfect human body?’ A slim waist and generous posterior? Well Alice Roberts has a completely different idea.
Anatomist Alice Roberts, a doctor and writer, had the idea to create a model of the perfect human body. Instead of the usual standards of beauty and fitness, she thought about mixing up some not-so-great human parts with awesome ones found in other animals. She documented this wild experiment in the BBC show “Can Science Make Me Perfect?” that aired in the UK in 2018.
First up in Roberts’ dream body was a kangaroo-inspired marsupial pouch. Picture this: human babies would be born really early like marsupials and then finish growing in a cozy pouch like a kangaroo. Maybe this could make childbirth easier and safer for human moms.
Next on the list for the perfect human body according to Roberts: ostrich legs. These bad boys make ostriches crazy-fast runners, thanks to extra muscle near the body. Imagine having those legs – maybe humans could beat morning traffic and save on all that fuel money!
Roberts also thought big with bat-like ears to boost hearing power, especially for high-frequency sounds that we lose as we get older. She also added octopus-style wired eyes to eliminate our blind spots caused by our eyeball setup.
Roberts took her model further by borrowing bird lungs for better oxygen processing, sturdy chimp-like spines for stability, and extra coronary artery links to pump blood like champs – just like dogs and guinea pigs do.
Roberts’ vision of a mashup human-animal body was all about upgrading to be the best version of ourselves, mixing the best features from nature to create the ultimate human form. The model may not be attractive bit she sure is efficient. What do you think of this model?
