Happy Global money week! Global money week is an annual global awareness-raising campaign on the importance of ensuring that young people, from an early age, are financially aware. This year’s theme is “Protect your money, secure your future.” On that note let’s talk about some ways that we can save more money and get the most our of earnings. How do you save money?
Are you tired of constantly feeling like your wallet is on life support? Do you find yourself wondering where all your hard-earned cash disappears to every month? In Shona they say “mari muenzi,” meaning that money is a guest that never overstays its welcome.
Planting a garden
First up is the age-old tradition of planting a garden. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “I have a black thumb, I can barely keep a cactus alive, let alone a garden.” Or probably you feel you dont have time, or you dont have a big enough space. Give it a try. Not only will you save money on buying tomatoes, veggies and onions every other day, but you’ll also have the satisfaction of fresh readily available produce. Plant some strawberries while your at it too.😉
Pack a lunchbox
Next on our list of money-saving hacks is the trusty lunchbox. Yes, that’s right, packing your own lunch for work instead of buying the chips or burger or sadza from the restaurants every day. It might seem like just $2 but it accumulates to a lot if done everyday. Pack some leftovers from home and and your good to go for lunch.
Buy a money tin
If you’ve ever thought, “But I have no self-control when it comes to spending money, I need help!” Then I have the solution for you. The piggy bank/ money tin. Yes, that childhood staple of saving spare change can actually be a powerful tool for adults too. By setting aside a portion of your income each month and stashing it away in your trusty piggy bank, you’ll be able to build up a nice little nest egg for a rainy day. You’ll be so satisfied when you open it after a year or so and find all the dollar notes stashed away.
Download a monthly budget tracker
If you really want to take your money-saving game to the next level, try implementing a budget to track your expenses and ensure you’re staying on track. There are many free apps that help you to have a clear picture of your income vs your expenses and how much you need to set aside to reach certain goals within a certain period. Having a clear and objective picture of your money flow can help you to make conscious spending decisions.
