Zimbabwean musician, composer and choreographer Vusa Mkhaya who is based in Austria has been awarded the Willi Resetarits Preis award in recognition of his artistic artistic originality and social commitment.
The awards ceremony took place on Saturday 20 April at Fluchtlingsball in Vienna, Austria, in honour of Wilhelm Resetarits, better known as Willi Resetarits, an Austrian singer, comedian and human rights activist.
In his acceptance speech, Mkhaya expressed gratitude to all those who have shared their incredible talents with him over the years. He emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This award, he believes, belongs to everyone who has contributed to his journey.
The Willi Resetarits Preis will be an annual award, celebrating musical personalities or bands with a strong commitment to social causes. The award includes a prize of ten thousand euros.
For the past three decades, Mkhaya has been an integral part of Vienna’s arts and culture scene. His socially conscious songs address global issues, making a positive impact through his music.
His work embodies the spirit of “Ubuntu,” emphasizing mutual support, listening, and compassion—a philosophy deeply ingrained in Southern African culture.
His discography includes Watu Wote, Manyanyatha, Abalalanga, Lalela and Africa, among others.
