Meet Our Man Crush Monday (MCM): Jacob Mafuleni

Jacob Mafuleni, the founder of Tsoro Arts, has had a remarkable journey in the world of music and dance. Growing up in Dzivaresekwa’s dense suburbs, Jacob’s passion for traditional instruments and dance began at a young age. With extensive experience in creating and playing musical instruments, as well as performing traditional dances, Jacob has made a name for himself in the industry.

Early Career and Global Tours

Jacob’s career began in 1990 with the Boterekwa Dance Troupe, led by the late David Tafaneyi Gweshe, a renowned traditional dance icon. During his time with the troupe, Jacob honed his skills in playing marimba, mbira, drums, and performing traditional music. He toured globally with the group, showcasing his talents to international audiences.

Forming New Groups and Releasing Music

In 1993, Jacob joined Ramambo Marimba and later formed Sweet Calabash in 1999, which was later renamed Shingira Mbira Master. The group released a six-track album, Zerevende, showcasing their musical prowess. Jacob also joined Mbira dzeNharira, touring China and other countries in Asia and Africa.

Collaborations and Founding Tsoro Arts

Jacob’s diverse talents in playing instruments, singing, and dancing earned him a spot with Chiwoniso Maraire and Vibe Culture, touring extensively throughout Europe. Inspired by his experiences, Jacob founded Tsoro Arts to give back to his community. At Tsoro Arts, Jacob teaches local youth how to craft and play traditional instruments for free. He also leads the Mhodzi Marimba band, which consists of three categories: 10-year-olds, 14-year-olds, women’s marimba band, and a mixed-gender marimba band.

Jacob’s dedication to preserving traditional music and dance, as well as his passion for empowering the next generation will forever make him a legend in the Arts industry.
