The Mbudzi Interchange project in Harare is nearing completion, with 9 out of 15 bridges already finished. The project, which aims to ease congestion at the intersection along the busy Harare-Beitbridge Highway, is expected to be finished by the second quarter of 2024.
Members of the Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development recently toured the construction site and were impressed with the progress made so far. The project has already seen significant advancements in civil works and bridge construction, with a total of 55% completion rate.
The Mbudzi Interchange project is part of the government’s infrastructural development agenda, driven by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision. The project is financed through a loan from Fossil Mines (Pvt) Limited, the parent company of Fossil Contracting, and is being executed by the Tefoma Construction joint venture, comprising local firms Tensor Systems, Fossil Contracting, and Masimba Construction.
Once completed, the interchange will significantly improve the intersection of Simon Mazorodze, Chitungwiza, and High Glen roads, making travel easier and safer for everyone. The project has already seen 46 out of 51 property owners affected by the construction compensated, with engagements ongoing with the remaining five.
The project’s completion will mark a significant milestone in the country’s transportation network, improving connectivity and reducing congestion in one of the busiest intersections in Harare. With a budget of US$88 million and US$45 million already spent, the project is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s economy and transportation sector.
