Harare, Zimbabwe – The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) has announced a significant decline in malaria cases, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to combat the disease.
According to the latest disease surveillance report, the number of malaria cases decreased from 1,584 in the week ending May 12, 2024, to 1,285 in the week ending May 19, 2024. This represents a 19% drop in just one week.
The report also revealed that no deaths were recorded during this period, a testament to the effectiveness of the ministry’s malaria prevention and treatment strategies.
While the majority of cases were reported in Mashonaland Central Province (784) and Mashonaland West Province (347), the ministry has expressed concern over the 129 cases (10.3%) reported among children under the age of five.
The cumulative figures for malaria cases stand at 25,717, with 47 deaths, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and investment in malaria control efforts.
The MoHCC attributes the recent decline in weekly cases to its intensified efforts to expand access to malaria prevention and treatment services, as well as its ongoing collaboration with international partners.
As Zimbabwe continues to battle malaria, the ministry remains committed to scaling up its response to the disease, with a focus on reducing cases and deaths among vulnerable populations.
