On this week in 1923, Herbert Chitepo, the first black barrister in Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia), was born. Chitepo’s life was marked by his unwavering dedication to the fight for justice and equality.
He made history in 1954 as the first black person to be admitted to the bar in Zimbabwe, paving the way for future generations of black lawyers. Chitepo’s leadership and vision played a crucial role in the nationalist movement, and he co-founded the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) in 1963.
