Dr. Gee, a hip-hop artist from Chitungwiza, recently released his project titled Zimbabwe, which features Clarks Dada. It was released a month ago and premiered on the national television station and radio station as well.
Speaking to Dandaro online, the hip-hop buddy was excited as he mentioned the project was his most successful. “It gave me radio airplay, TV play, and more exposure, more fans, and more following,” he said.
The video, directed by Razor, gives snippets of Zimbabwe’s tourist sites, such as the Victoria Falls and Great Zimbabwe, among other places. It also shows the capital city of Harare and the iconic Mbuya Nehanda statue.
Born Gerald Munetsi from Chitungwiza, Dr. Gee comes from a family of six (1 girl and 5 boys). He went to Zengeza High School and studied accounting at the Southern African Association of Accountants.
Despite doing accounting, he always had a passion for music. “It has always been a passion. I started doing rap music as a hobby back in high school, but I started to be serious with music in 2019,” he said.
As of now, Dr. Gee has released eight singles, including the recent “Zimbabwe.”He is planning to release an EP later this year and an album later next year.
One of the challenges he faced as an artist was exposure. The artist said, “The exposure is the main challenge I’m facing, as is the rest of the underground artists like me. There is a lot of talent out there, and the industry should dig more into the streets.”
Dr. Gee was inspired by American rappers 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, and 2 Pac. He wishes to do a collabo with three top rappers. Locally, he wishes to collaborate with Holy Ten and Volts JT.
“My advice is to artists: keep on pushing, put zim hip hop on the world map, and make a respected genre.” He said.
