This week in history, on July 4, 1969, Zimbabwe’s football legend Wilfred Mugeyi was born. Nicknamed “Silver Fox” for his ability to sneak up behind opposition defenses, Mugeyi enjoyed a long and fruitful career with South African side Bush Bucks, as well as a successful international career with Zimbabwe.
Mugeyi’s achievements on the field are impressive, having won three top awards in the 1996/97 season, including PSL Player of the Year, Player’s Player of the Year, and Top Goalscorer of the Season. He also had spells in Israel and China, playing for Maccabi Haifa and Shenyang Haishi respectively.
After retiring from professional football, Mugeyi went on to become an assistant coach at Ajax Cape Town, and later took on head coaching roles at Chippa United and AmaZulu. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of footballers, and his contributions to the sport are still celebrated today.
