This week in 2013, singer, songwriter, and exponent of Zimbabwean mbira music, Chiwoniso Maraire died at the
South Medical Hospital in Chitungwiza. She was 37.
An accomplished singer, songwriter and proponent of mbira music Chiwoniso crossed all musical borders inspiring young Zimbabweans to play the mbira in a more modern and contemporary way. Being the daughter of the renowned Zimbabwean mbira master Dumisani Maraire, she began playing mbira at the age of four and had her first recording at nine years old.
Chiwoniso’s music career flourished throughout her life. She performed with her family’s band Mhuri yaMaraire (The Maraire Family) and her father’s marimba groups [World Music Central].
She was part of the award-winning group Peace Of Ebony (P.O.E.) and released several solo albums throughout her career, including “Ancient Voices” (1998), “Timeless” (2004), and “Rebel Woman” (2008). Her music blended traditional Shona mbira with contemporary influences.
Chiwoniso Maraire is remembered as a talented musician who helped bring Zimbabwean mbira music to a wider audience.
