In a historic move, Zimbabwe’s Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry has announced her candidacy for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The election is set to take place in March 2025 in Athens, Greece, during the IOC’s 143rd session.

Coventry, a renowned Olympic swimmer, won numerous medals, including gold, during her illustrious sporting career. Her impressive athletic background and experience as a sports administrator make her a strong contender for the top position.

If elected, Coventry would succeed Thomas Bach, who has led the IOC since 2013. Her candidacy marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwe and Africa, as she would be the first African to hold the presidency.

Coventry’s vision for the IOC presidency focuses on promoting Olympic values, supporting athlete development, and enhancing the global reach of the Olympic movement.
