On April 19, 1980, Bob Marley and the Wailers performed an unforgettable show in front of 100,000 fans at Rufaro Stadium in Harare. The energy was electric, and the crowd was mesmerized by Marley’s soulful voice and captivating stage presence.
The day before, on April 18th, Marley sang his powerful song “Zimbabwe” at the country’s first independence celebrations. This momentous occasion marked a new era for Zimbabwe, and Marley’s performance was a fitting tribute to the country’s struggle for freedom.
During his performance, Marley proclaimed to the crowd: “How good and how pleasant it would be before God and man, yeah, to see the unification of all Africans.” A testament to his enduring message of unity and freedom, Marley’s words continue to inspire generations to strive for a more harmonious and equitable world. Just a year after his historic performance in Zimbabwe, Bob Marley’s life was cut short when he succumbed to cancer at the age of 36. His passing was a devastating loss for the music world and his fans globally.
