After years of anticipation, the Gwayi-Shangani Dam in Matabeleland North is finally taking shape, promising a lasting solution to the region’s perennial water problems. The dam, a crucial component of the Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project (MZWP), is expected to bring relief to the water-scarce region.
Located 6 km downstream of the confluence of the Gwayi River and Shangani River, the roller-compacted concrete gravity dam boasts an impressive capacity of 634 million cubic meters. With a depth of 59 meters and 11 meters of freeboard, the dam is an engineering marvel.
The MZWP, a three-phase project valued at $600 million, aims to address water shortages in Bulawayo by harnessing water from the Zambezi River. While funding inconsistencies have plagued the project, the dam’s completion marks a significant milestone.
Once operational, the Gwayi-Shangani Dam will:
– Provide a reliable water source for irrigation, industry, and domestic use
– Support economic growth and development in the region
– Enhance food security through increased agricultural production
– Improve the overall quality of life for communities in Matabeleland North.
