The highly anticipated 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualification Group J match between Zimbabwe and Cameroon ended in a goalless draw at the Mandela National Stadium in Uganda on Tuesday evening.
The Warriors, under new coach Michael Nees, created the first real chance of the game when Marshall Munetsi set up Khama Billiat, who missed the target just four minutes into the match. Despite a strong finish to the first half, the Indomitable Lions failed to capitalize on their opportunities, with Vincent Aboubakar ballooning his effort over the crossbar in the 44th minute.
The second half saw Cameroon’s Andre Onana become the busier of the two goalkeepers, denying Munetsi’s headed attempt in the 57th minute. Zimbabwe had five shots on target, while Cameroon failed to register any. The Warriors’ solid defensive display kept Aboubakar at bay, while Billiat was denied by Onana’s great save in the 64th minute.
The draw leaves Zimbabwe third in the group standings, having drawn their first two matches. They will face Namibia home and away in October 2024. Cameroon, placed second in the group, will face Kenya home and away next month.
Despite the lack of goals, the match showcased a strong defensive performance by Zimbabwe and a resilient display by Cameroon. The Warriors will look to build on this performance in their upcoming qualifiers, while the Indomitable Lions will aim to capitalize on their chances in their next matches.
