Tawanda Chirewa, a rising star of the Zimbabwe Warriors, may be in doubt for the team’s next 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches after a disciplinary fallout with coach Michael Nees. Chirewa was substituted during the Warriors’ goalless draw against Kenya, and his reaction to the decision has raised eyebrows.

The midfielder, on loan to Derby County from Wolves, expressed disbelief and had an exchange of words with Nees, who took exception to Chirewa’s conduct. Chirewa declined to speak to journalists before the Warriors’ game against Cameroon, which also ended 0-0.

Chirewa’s exclusion from the starting lineup against Cameroon was the only change made by Nees, who opted for Douglas Mapfumo to partner Prince Dube, Khama Billiat, and Walter Musona. Chirewa eventually came on as a late substitute, replacing Musona in the 86th minute.

The incident has raised concerns within the Warriors technical crew and the ZIFA Normalisation Committee, who are reportedly unhappy with Chirewa’s behavior. The midfielder’s future with the team hangs in the balance as the Warriors prepare to face COSAFA rivals Namibia in back-to-back clashes on October 11 and 15.
