The Zimbabwean government has sounded the alarm on unregistered schools operating outside the law, pledging decisive action against non-compliant institutions. Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Torerai Moyo emphasized the critical need for registration to safeguard educational standards.

Unregistered schools, often hidden in informal settings, pose significant risks to students. Without oversight, these institutions frequently fail to meet basic educational requirements, jeopardizing the future of their pupils. Minister Moyo stressed that registration is crucial for ensuring schools provide quality education.

In a bid to boost educational quality, Minister Moyo invited private investors and corporations to join forces with the government through public-private partnerships. This collaborative approach aims to revitalize Zimbabwe’s education sector, which has faced declining literacy and numeracy rates.

The government’s crackdown marks a significant step toward reclaiming the educational landscape. With 287 illegal private schools in Harare already licensed, the remaining 148 non-compliant institutions face imminent closure. Owners who refuse to register risk arrest and prosecution.
