The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has appointed Tendai Matore, a Zimbabwean national, as its Acting Chief Financial Officer (CFO), sparking outrage among South Africans. Matore’s appointment follows the resignation of Yolande van Biljon, who will officially leave her post on November 30. Van Biljon received praise for improving the SABC’s financial standing, achieving an unqualified audit opinion for the first time in 14 years.
Matore, who joined the SABC in 2017, holds a Chartered Accountant certification and an MBA in Finance from Durham Business School in the UK. Despite his qualifications, many South Africans have expressed discontent over the decision, questioning why a local candidate was not chosen for the position.
The SABC board, management, and staff thanked van Biljon for her contributions, wishing her well in her future endeavors. The corporation now faces scrutiny over Matore’s appointment, with many calling for transparency and accountability in the hiring process.
