Douglas Mwonzora, a prominent politician and lawyer, is facing financial and legal troubles after his law firm, Mwonzora and Associates, failed to pay rent for three months. The firm’s office property was seized last week, with reports indicating that the company owes US$3,750 in unpaid rentals accrued from July to September 2024.
The seizure was carried out by the Messenger of Court, who attached property including sofas, reception desks, office equipment, and a generator. The landlord, Simon Denhere, had issued Mwonzora with summons demanding the unpaid rentals on September 19. Denhere was granted leave to attach property by the Harare Civil Court.
Mwonzora has responded by filing an urgent chamber application for the discharge of the attachment. He argues that the ex parte application was unnecessary and that the removal of property, including client case files, was unjustified. The matter is set for hearing, and Mwonzora faces additional costs if he wishes to retain his property.
