A 28-year-old shift manager at Simbisa Bakers Inn, William Gonese, has been convicted of theft after stealing $3,420 from his workplace to fund his online gambling habit. Gonese, a resident of Seke in Chitungwiza, appeared before Harare Magistrate Ms. Lynne Chinzou and admitted to the crime, stating that his intention was not to steal but to make quick profits through betting.
Gonese’s troubles began when he started betting with $350, but his losses mounted, and he continued to gamble in an attempt to recover his losses. Unfortunately, he lost the entire $3,420, which he had taken from his workplace during a night shift. In court, Gonese explained that he was trying to win money to impress his new wife, who had recently moved in with him.
The court heard that Gonese was responsible for the missing amount, which included $470 in cash and $2,950 in InnBucks deposits. The company’s audit manager, Mr. Yusufu Bruce, confirmed the full amount was missing after Gonese called him to admit to his actions. Gonese’s sentencing has been scheduled for the following day.
