High Court Judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi has dealt a blow to Prophet Walter Magaya’s ambitions to lead the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) by upholding the decision to bar him from contesting in this Saturday’s election. Magaya, the owner of Yadah FC, had challenged his disqualification in the High Court, arguing that his “higher qualifications” from the University of South Africa (UNISA) should be considered.
However, Justice Chitapi ruled that ZIFA’s statutes are clear: candidates must produce an O’Level certificate with at least 5 subjects. Magaya failed to meet this requirement, and his arguments about having higher qualifications were rejected. The judge emphasized that even if Magaya holds a PhD, he would still need to produce an O’Level certificate to meet the eligibility criteria.
Magaya’s disqualification is a significant setback for his presidential ambitions, and it’s unclear what his next move will be. The ZIFA elections are set to take place, and Magaya’s absence from the ballot will likely have a significant impact on the outcome.
