Zimbabwe is set to revolutionize its water management system with the nationwide introduction of prepaid smart water meters. The initiative, which aims to enhance potable water provision and modernize water infrastructure, will begin in Harare. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant and new conveyancing infrastructure will be established, with private entities overseeing water purification, distribution, billing, and wastewater management.
The prepaid smart meters will replace Harare’s outdated billing system, allowing residents to monitor and manage their water consumption in real-time. Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume highlighted the benefits of the new system, stating that it will enable residents to make informed decisions to reduce their water usage. However, urban planning expert Dr. Percy Toriro urged caution, noting that privatizing public utilities can bring efficiency but often makes services unaffordable for many.
The smart meter program is expected to extend to residential areas across Zimbabwe, with technical teams determining the number of meters required. The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has signed agreements with the City of Harare, Hangzhou Liaison Technology Company, and Helcraw Electrical to implement the initiative under a Build, Transfer, and Operate model. The government hopes that this initiative will lead to more efficient water management and a more sustainable system for the future.
