European Union Lifts Final Sanctions on Zimbabwe

KingRu
2 Min Read

The European Union has officially removed its last remaining sanctions on Zimbabwe, lifting the asset freeze on the Zimbabwe Defence Industries. This move marks the complete removal of EU-imposed restrictions on Zimbabwean entities, a significant development in the country’s relationship with the international community. The sanctions were initially introduced in 2002 after then-President Robert Mugabe expelled the EU’s chief election observer.

20190311 EP 086075A EVS 163 RESIZED M 0

Although the EU has lifted direct sanctions, it will maintain an arms embargo on Zimbabwe, restricting the sale of weapons and equipment that could be used for internal repression. The EU has progressively eased restrictions over the years, and this latest move is seen as a positive development. However, the EU has renewed its 2011 non-binding Council Decision for another year, allowing it to impose new sanctions on Zimbabwean individuals or entities if human rights concerns arise.

The EU has reiterated its commitment to monitoring Zimbabwe’s human rights situation and will continue to provide development aid through non-governmental organizations and other entities, bypassing the government. This approach reflects the EU’s cautious stance, balancing its desire to support Zimbabwe’s development with its concerns about human rights and governance.
