Zimbabwe’s ICT Minister, Tatenda Mavetera, is suspected of falsely claiming to hold a doctoral degree. An investigation has raised questions about the legitimacy of her PhD, which was allegedly obtained from the International Women’s University, an institution whose authenticity has been disputed. Furthermore, allegations have surfaced that she hired a ghostwriter to complete her PhD coursework at Midlands State University.

Mavetera’s use of the title “Dr.” has continued despite a High Court ruling in July 2024, which prohibited the International Institution of Philanthropy (IIP) from awarding degrees. The IIP is a bogus entity fronted by Enrico Maverick, a convicted criminal. Real academics have dismissed the IIP’s awards as fake, stating that non-academic institutions cannot confer authentic honorary degrees.
The allegations surrounding Mavetera’s academic credentials have raised concerns about academic integrity. An investigation into her other degrees is ongoing, and it remains to be seen whether she will face any consequences for her actions.
