Urban Connect’s operating license has been suspended for six months following a devastating bus crash that claimed 25 lives along the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway. Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona announced the suspension, citing serious breaches of the company’s license terms and conditions. The bus involved in the crash lacked a valid Passenger Insurance Policy and a route permit, and the driver was non-compliant with mandatory retesting requirements.
The fatal crash, which occurred last Thursday, was a head-on collision with a haulage truck. Minister Mhona expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The suspension of Urban Connect’s license is effective immediately, and none of the company’s buses will be allowed to operate on Zimbabwe’s roads during the six-month period.
The government’s decision to suspend Urban Connect’s license reflects its commitment to enforcing road safety laws and regulations. Minister Mhona emphasized that the ministry will not hesitate to suspend and cancel licenses of operators who violate terms and conditions of their licenses, traffic rules, and regulations. The suspension serves as a warning to other transport operators to adhere to safety protocols and regulations to avoid similar consequences.
