Our #WCW today is Runyararo Mapfumo, a talented British Zimbabwean film director, writer, and producer making waves in the entertainment industry. Born to Zimbabwean parents, Runyararo’s cultural heritage has undoubtedly influenced her unique storytelling perspective.

Growing up, Runyararo developed a passion for storytelling and filmmaking. Her journey to becoming a renowned director began with her education. She attended Sheffield Hallam University, where she earned a first-class honors degree in Film and Visual Effects in 2013.
Runyararo’s career in film took off shortly after graduating. She started creating short films that showcased her exceptional talent and sensitivity as a storyteller. Her early work caught the attention of prominent industry players, including the British Film Institute, BBC, and Google Arts, who provided her with funding and support.
One of Runyararo’s notable projects is her work on the critically acclaimed Netflix series Sex Education. Her direction on the show’s third season earned her a nomination for the 2022 BAFTA Emerging Talent (Fiction) award. This recognition solidified her position as a rising star in the film and television industry.
In addition to her work on Sex Education, Runyararo has directed several short films, including Masterpiece, Dawn in the Dark, and What’s in a Name?. These films have premiered at prestigious festivals like the BFI London Film Festival and have garnered multiple award nominations.
Runyararo’s success extends beyond her filmography. She was named a 2022 ‘Star of Tomorrow’ by Screen Daily and a 2022 BAFTA Breakthrough writer/director. These accolades acknowledge her innovative storytelling, exceptional direction, and dedication to her craft.
Currently, Runyararo is working on new projects, including directing the second block of the upcoming Netflix series Kaos. She is also developing her debut feature film, which promises to be an exciting new chapter in her career.
