Today marks 15 years since the tragic passing of Sam Mtukudzi, a talented young musician and son of the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi. Sam’s early life was deeply rooted in music, having joined his father on tours playing the saxophone and guitar after graduating from high school.

Sam’s music career was on the rise, with his own jazz-influenced band, Ay Band, and two solo albums under his belt. His debut album, Rume Rimwe, was released in 2008 to critical acclaim. Oliver Mtukudzi, proud of his son’s talent, often introduced Sam as “the future” to audiences, including a notable performance at a British nightclub in 2009.

Tragically, Sam’s life was cut short in a car crash on March 15, 2010, while traveling back to Norton near Harare with his sound engineer, Owen Chimhare. Both Sam and Owen lost their lives in the accident. Today, we remember Sam Mtukudzi’s promising music career and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him.
