A devastating accident at the Dzivarasekwa turnoff along Bulawayo Road on Wednesday morning has claimed the lives of seven commuters and left eight others injured. The driver of the kombi involved in the crash lacked the necessary documentation to drive a commuter omnibus, according to Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona. Furthermore, the kombi was not certified as roadworthy and was unauthorized to carry passengers.
Minister Mhona expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also issued a stern warning to transport operators, motorists, and the public, vowing that his Ministry would take stricter measures to ensure passenger safety. The Minister’s statement highlighted the blatant disregard for road traffic rules and regulations that led to the tragic accident.
The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of public transportation in the country. With the kombi driver’s reckless behavior and the vehicle’s unroadworthy condition, it is clear that more needs to be done to prevent such accidents in the future. The Ministry’s pledge to take stricter measures is a step in the right direction, but it remains to be seen how effectively these measures will be implemented.
