A 16-year-old girl from Mutare’s Chikanga suburb has been arrested for allegedly stealing US$25,000 from her brother-in-law, Kelvin Motsi. The teenager, who cannot be named due to her age, confessed to stealing the money with her 15-year-old boyfriend on multiple occasions. The pair went on a reckless spending spree, purchasing luxury items such as a car, iPhones, and designer clothes.
The police were alerted to the theft after the girl flaunted her newfound wealth on WhatsApp, displaying large sums of money. Upon investigation, the girl’s boyfriend was found driving a Toyota Axio without a license and was subsequently arrested. The boyfriend’s mother, Munyaradzi Madzure, 39, was also arrested for receiving US$5,000 from her son for safekeeping and refusing to hand it over to the police.
The total value stolen was US$25,000, with US$9,000 worth of items recovered, including the vehicle and iPhones. The suspects are currently in police custody, awaiting court proceedings. Neighbors described the teenagers’ sudden change in lifestyle, with one neighbor stating that the girl used to be quiet but was suddenly posting pictures of herself with large sums of money.
