Bulawayo police have imposed a three-month ban on carrying weapons in public, effective March 28, 2025, to June 26, 2025. The move follows a surge in violent crimes in the city, including murder, armed robbery, assaults, rape, and domestic violence. Chief Superintendent Vusumuzi Nkomo issued the prohibition order, warning that anyone found with banned items would face legal consequences.

The ban applies to the entire Bulawayo Central policing district and prohibits carrying weapons in public places, including open spaces, streets, and thoroughfares. *Banned items* include machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knives, daggers, catapults, traditional weapons, and any item capable of being used as a weapon. Police officers have been authorized to enforce the ban strictly, seizing weapons without a warrant and holding them as evidence in court proceedings.
Individuals caught violating the order could face a fine of up to Level 5, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. The authorities have urged residents to comply with the order to maintain peace and security. A similar ban has been imposed in Harare, with a two-month prohibition order banning similar weapons, effective March 27, 2025, to May 31, 2025.
