Sergeant Abel Masava, a police officer based at Tshabalala Police Station in Bulawayo, was shot dead in the early hours of Friday while on duty. Masava had stopped a group of five men to question them about their whereabouts and request identification. However, one of the men pulled out a firearm and shot him in the head at point-blank range.

Masava was responding to a domestic violence report in Sizinda when the incident occurred. He was standing next to a police vehicle, dressed in his full police uniform, when the fatal shooting happened. The suspects fled the scene, and Masava was rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The police have launched a manhunt for Masava’s killers and are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to their arrest. This incident comes just weeks after another police officer, Detective Cassandra Hove, was shot and killed in Pumula South suburb on March 6. Residents of Sizinda and Tshabalala have expressed shock and fear, calling for increased police patrols and better protective measures for officers.
