Our #MCM today is Alex Marufu, a renowned entrepreneur in the technology space with a career spanning over four decades. He has held various leadership positions, including non-executive director of CBZ Bank, chairman of the board of TBWA Zimbabwe and Artson Systems in Kenya, and previously chaired the NetOne Cellular board.
Alex’s journey in technology began when he left ICL in 1997 to set up PrimeNet Communications, one of Zimbabwe’s earliest Internet companies. The company was later sold to Multichoice/MWeb. He then joined SAP in 1999, leading the growth of its business in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi.
In the mid-2000s, Alex introduced Internet banking, SMS banking, and third-party transaction acquiring through his startup company, Uniswitch. The company was later acquired by Twenty Third Century Systems (TTCS), where Alex managed the Government of Zimbabwe’s e-government initiatives and oversaw the growth of TTCS’s business into seven African countries.
Alex holds a BSc degree in Physics, Mathematics, and Computing Science, an MBA from the University of Zimbabwe, a Master’s in ICT, and a PhD in Information Systems from the University of Pretoria. He also teaches and conducts research in Design Science Research, Innovation, and Disruptive Technologies.
In addition to his technology career, Alex founded Alex Marufu Life Coach, a certified coaching services organization rooted in Christian values. The organization aims to empower individuals to overcome their limitations and realize their maximum potential.
Today, Alex splits his time between growing technology businesses across Africa, managing a family-owned property portfolio, and research, writing, and teaching. His work has had a significant impact on the technology industry and beyond, inspiring individuals to reach their full potential.
