The Bulawayo City Council conducted a surprise operation on Sunday night, impounding cars parked illegally in several western suburbs. The operation targeted vehicles left outside designated parking areas, such as shopping centers and car parks. Many residents woke up to find their cars had been seized and relocated to council holding areas, sparking frustration among vehicle owners who now face fees to retrieve them.
The crackdown comes after repeated warnings from the council, which has urged motorists to avoid illegal parking across the city. The operation aimed to address concerns from car park operators who reported losses due to residents parking outside secured car park fences and in front of shops with security guards. The council seeks to ensure compliance with parking regulations and promote orderly parking practices.
The council cited its Clamping and Tow Away By-Laws, Section 19, Subsection 1, which prohibits parking on land or premises under council control without authorization. The council encourages residents to use legal car parks for overnight vehicle storage. Vehicle owners must now pay to retrieve their impounded cars.
