Challenges Facing the Zimbabwean Leather Industry

In recent years, Zimbabwe’s leather industry has faced significant challenges, including a lack of capital, outdated manufacturing technology, and intense competition from cheaper materials. However, despite these setbacks, industry statistics show signs of recovery, with potential for the sector to become a leading exporter and a major source of foreign currency for the country. Through Rukanda Pride, Paula has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to driving this economic transformation.

Products and Services

Located in the Eastlea area of Harare, Rukanda Pride offers a range of products including presidential briefcases, laptop bags, duffle bags, sling bags, corporate folders, shoes, wallets, belts, keyrings, wine holders, 100% leather portraits, handbags, and satchels. The company also provides expert advice on leather product care to ensure their longevity.

In an exciting development, Paula recently revealed that Rukanda Pride is preparing to launch its first furniture line, which will feature products made from authentic leather and teak wood.

Under Paula’s visionary leadership, Rukanda Pride has stood out as one of Zimbabwe’s premier leather product manufacturers, blending modern design with African heritage since 2018.

Empowering Others Through Entrepreneurship

As an entrepreneur, Paula has created sustainable opportunities for individuals involved with her firm. Rukanda Pride’s products have been widely praised by Zimbabwe’s prominent figures for their authenticity, elegance, and durability. During the 2024 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, Presidents Emmerson Mnangagwa and William Ruto visited Rukanda Pride’s stand to show their appreciation for Paula’s work.

Paula’s Background & Entrepreneurial Journey

Paula’s entrepreneurial journey is a story of resilience and determination. What began as a means of earning income to support herself and her younger sister has grown into a thriving business with a dual mission: to create high-quality leather products and to break cycles of marginalization by providing financial inclusion and pathways to social mobility for youth and young women.

Raised by a single mother in a family of three girls, Paula’s passion for establishing Rukanda Pride was inspired by watching her mother balance her corporate career with side businesses. Tragically, Paula and her siblings lost both parents at a young age and were forced to live with their grandparents in the streets of Highfields, Harare. Despite the hardships of her early life, Paula’s determination to succeed has propelled her forward, proving that one’s background does not determine their future.

After completing her O-levels, Paula moved to Victoria Falls, where she worked as a call agent. Realizing that her salary would not sustain her or her siblings, she soon left her job and ventured into cross-border trading, dealing in fashion apparel. It was during this time that she met a shoemaker in a local neighborhood and saw potential in the leather industry. This encounter marked the beginning of Rukanda Pride, with Paula starting out by making shoes and leather belts.

Now 28 years old, Paula is on a mission to position Rukanda Pride as an internationally recognized luxury leather brand. Through her work, she aims to contribute to Zimbabwe’s economic development by creating jobs and investment opportunities.

The Birth of Rukanda Pride

Paula recalls how her entrepreneurial spirit was ignited during her teenage years when she encountered Mr. Sithole, an elderly man making shoes under a tree in Chitungwiza. After working with Mr. Sithole as a marketing specialist, Paula decided to name her business Rukanda Pride—the word “Rukanda” comes from the Shona term for leather (“ganda”), and “Pride” symbolizes Africa’s pride in its leather craftsmanship.

Although Paula faced numerous challenges, including moments when she nearly gave up, her perseverance and vision kept her on course. Despite being forced out of formal education at a young age due to her circumstances, she often humorously refers to her highest education as coming from “The University of Life.” She later earned a National Diploma in Office Administration.

Continued Growth and Recognition

Paula has worked tirelessly to equip herself with the skills needed to run her business effectively, acknowledging that many of the challenges she faced were due to her initial lack of experience. To further enhance her abilities, she participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship at Jackson State University, which focuses on leadership development.

Rukanda Pride has since been invited to showcase its products at major events, including the Windhoek Show, the 2024 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, and the SADC Industrial Week, among others.

Paula’s exceptional work has earned her several prestigious awards, including the 2022 MACYDO Lead 30 Under 30 award for top entrepreneur and recognition from the Entrepreneur Network of Zimbabwe (ENZ), among others.
