A daring daylight robbery occurred in Bulawayo yesterday afternoon, as six masked suspects targeted a Safeguard Security cash-in-transit vehicle outside Ecobank’s Parkade Centre branch. The thieves made off with a staggering US$4 million in cash, using a white Ford Ranger (registration AGP 2333) to load cash boxes at the corner of 9th Avenue and Fife Street.

An eyewitness described the chaotic scene, recounting how the thieves fired a shot into the air, ordered the security guards to lie down, and dragged the safes into their vehicle before speeding away along George Silundika Street. The Ecobank employee confirmed that the stolen money was destined for Harare.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi expressed concern over the rising trend of insider-led robberies, urging companies to enhance security measures and avoid storing large amounts of cash on premises.

Police are investigating the robbery and have called on the public to provide information leading to the arrest of the suspects. The incident has raised concerns about the security of cash-in-transit vehicles and the need for improved measures to prevent such brazen robberies.
