Zimbabwe’s data protection landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has begun enforcing data protection laws, requiring organizations that collect personal data to obtain licenses. This move aims to increase confidence and trust in the secure use of information and communication technologies, as outlined in the Cyber and Data Protection Act.

The new regulations apply to a wide range of entities, including large enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, churches, and even business-oriented WhatsApp groups. Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, emphasized the urgency of compliance at a recent breakfast meeting. Organizations must now take immediate action to obtain necessary licenses and ensure compliance with the Act.

Failure to comply may result in penalties and reputational damage. As POTRAZ regulates and oversees compliance, Zimbabwe takes a crucial step towards safeguarding personal data and promoting trust in the digital ecosystem. With data protection awareness already high among Zimbabwean organizations, this enforcement drive seeks to translate awareness into concrete action. Organizations are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the regulations and take proactive steps to ensure compliance.
