Our #MCM today is Tafadzwa Chikwereti, a visionary entrepreneur and farmer from Zimbabwe.
Growing up on his family’s small farm, Tafadzwa witnessed firsthand the struggles of smallholder farmers. This sparked a passion to solve these problems, leading him to research solutions in high school and consult experts.
At university, Tafadzwa launched Musika, linking farmers to buyers via WhatsApp. He then pivoted to eAgro, leveraging technology to bridge the information gap between small-scale farmers and large agribusinesses.
eAgro provides real-time market information, weather forecasts, and critical data, empowering farmers to make informed decisions. This has improved yields, allowed farmers to break the smallholder trap, earn better prices, generate extra income, and pay fees.
Today, eAgro services over 10,000 farmers in Zimbabwe, creating employment opportunities for young people. Tafadzwa has won several awards, including the Texas Christian University Business Plan Award and Yale Startup Review Student Edition.
A 2022 Anzisha Prize Fellowships Top 26 contestant and Best Young Startup of the Year 2022 (Zimbabwe) awardee, Tafadzwa aims to expand eAgro, promote agricultural education, and support students from farming backgrounds.
Tafadzwa was recently named among the top 50 shortlisted candidates for the prestigious Global Student Prize 2023, carrying an award of US$100,000. He was selected from over 3,851 applications from 122 countries.
Some of his notable achievements include:
– Founding eAgro, a platform serving over 10,000 farmers
– Developing Cropfix and Credfarm mobile apps
– Winning several awards for innovation
– Volunteering with the local Rotary Club
