Our #WCW today is Joy Makumbe, a trailblazing Zimbabwean engineer with over 20 years of experience as a qualified Civil, Water, and Sanitation Engineer.
Makumbe has successfully led project teams in Uganda, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, showcasing her exceptional leadership skills. She is the founder of Majorlic Construction company, established in 2010, and serves as a board member of Hydro-Utilities Consulting Engineers. Additionally, she volunteers as a water and sanitation specialist for ROCKblue.
Her impressive achievements have earned her numerous awards, including:
– 1st runner-up in the Construction Category at the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (2015)
– K.G. Stevens award for presenting a paper of high standard at the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers Biennial Conference (2022)
Driven by a vision to empower women in Africa to take up positions of impact and influence in Engineering and Science, Makumbe established the Joy Makumbe Trust in 2016. The trust focuses on entrepreneurial skills and career guidance for women.
To further support career guidance, Makumbe founded the Tech Girl Mentorship Program, paying it forward in her community and beyond. She is also an author, having published “Tech Girl Diaries,” a book aimed at motivating and inspiring girls to pursue STEM careers. Her journey in tech is documented on her YouTube channel, “The Tech Girl.”
Makumbe’s remarkable journey serves as a testament to her determination, resilience, and passion for engineering, community development, and women’s empowerment. As a role model, she inspires women to pursue careers in STEM and drive positive change.
