Gwanda Municipality has released a statement addressing the recent incident where a firefighter was seen using a small dish to extinguish a fire from a burning car. The incident occurred on November 18, 2024, near the NSSA complex in Gwanda, after a Toyota Runx caught fire due to a mechanical fault. Despite the firefighter’s efforts, the car was completely consumed by the flames.
The municipality explained that the fire team responded promptly to the distress call, but the lead fireman reported a mechanical issue with the vehicle, which hindered its optimal operation. As a result, the team had to improvise with a less-than-ideal firefighting strategy. However, a thorough investigation found no technical fault with the fire brigade vehicle.
The municipality emphasized the importance of adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within the Fire Section to avoid any issues during emergencies. They expressed regret over the incident and assured the public that corrective measures have been implemented to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.
