Yadah FC owner Walter Magaya has been disqualified from participating in the upcoming ZIFA elections due to his failure to submit an O-Level certificate. Despite this setback, Magaya has opted to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In his appeal, Magaya argues that his alternative qualifications, including a higher certificate in Marketing, a national diploma in Marketing, and a higher certificate in Theology, should be deemed sufficient to meet the eligibility criteria.
Magaya’s appeal centers on the interpretation of the ZIFA statutes, which require candidates to possess at least five O-Levels. Magaya contends that his qualifications, although different from O-Levels, are of a higher standard and should therefore be accepted. He asserts that a “proper and purposive interpretation” of the statutes supports his argument, emphasizing that his qualifications exceed the required O-Level certificate.
The outcome of Magaya’s appeal remains uncertain, leaving his bid for the ZIFA presidency hanging in the balance. The Court of Arbitration for Sport will review Magaya’s case and render a decision, which will determine whether he can proceed with his candidacy. The ZIFA elections are scheduled to take place on January 25, and the resolution of Magaya’s appeal will be closely watched by the Zimbabwean football community.
