According to Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu, Zimbabweans have spent a staggering $1.6 billion importing second-hand cars over the past five years. This massive expenditure on used vehicles has raised concerns about the country’s automotive industry and the economic implications of such spending.

Minister Ndlovu highlighted the alarming fact that these imported second-hand cars have a remarkably short lifespan on Zimbabwe’s roads. “The cars do not even last for three years on the road,” he noted. This not only represents a significant waste of financial resources but also underscores the need for a more sustainable and reliable transportation solution.

The minister’s revelations have sparked calls for a reevaluation of the country’s automotive import policies and a greater emphasis on promoting local vehicle manufacturing and assembly. By supporting domestic industry and promoting more durable and reliable vehicles, Zimbabwe can reduce its reliance on costly imports and foster a more sustainable transportation sector.
