The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has announced the temporary shutdown of two units at Hwange Power Station for maintenance, which is expected to result in increased power cuts. Unit 7, one of the two new generators commissioned in 2023 with a capacity of 300MW, will be taken offline from March 2 to March 29 for scheduled maintenance.

Adding to the woes, Unit 6, an older unit generating 150MW, will be shut down from March 15 to May 14 for statutory maintenance. This is being carried out to ensure readiness for increased generation during the peak winter season. The shutdowns are expected to put a strain on the already struggling power grid.
To mitigate the impact of the shutdowns, ZESA will regulate output at Kariba Power Station to conserve water for future electricity production. The power utility assured the nation that various strategies have been put in place to ensure a stable supply during the period. Kariba Power Station will be managed carefully to address periods of low supply caused by the outages.
