A devastating accident occurred in Shurugwi South when a Honda Fit carrying six people veered off the road and plunged into a water-filled, disused chrome pit. The vehicle was traveling from Shurugwi to Zvishavane when it lost control and crashed into the pit, sparking a frantic search and rescue operation.
Shurugwi District Development Coordinator, Rome Shangwa, confirmed the incident, stating that search operations are currently underway with sub-aqua teams deployed. The cause of the accident is still unknown, and authorities are working to identify the victims. The abandoned chrome pits in the area have long been a source of concern for local residents, who have repeatedly called on the government to close them due to the significant risk they pose.
Midlands police spokesperson, Emmanuel Mahoko, stated that the police are still gathering information on the incident and are yet to receive an official report. The incident has raised concerns about the dangers of abandoned mining pits, which are often filled with water and pose a significant risk to the community. In January, two minor children drowned in one of the pits, highlighting the need for urgent action to address this issue.
