Warriors coach Michael Nees has revealed why he has delayed announcing the squad to face Nigeria and Benin in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers Group C. With just over a week before the games, Nees is yet to name a preliminary selection. The national team is set to play Benin on March 20 in Durban, South Africa, before facing Nigeria on March 25 in Uyo.

According to Nees, the delay is due to his need for more time to assess the locally-based players, as the league has just begun. He expressed concerns about the players’ fitness levels, having only played a few matches. Nees likened selecting players without proper assessment to a “blind flight,” unsure if they are fit or ready for the games.
Nees emphasized the diversity of the Warriors team, comprising players from Europe, the USA, Iraq, South Africa, and locally-based players. He acknowledged the different situations and challenges faced by each group, which adds to the complexity of selecting the squad. Nees is expected to announce the squad soon, ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers
