In a rare diplomatic move, the US has expelled South Africa’s Ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, accusing him of “race-baiting” and being “no longer welcome” in the country. The US took issue with Rasool’s comments about President Donald Trump, whom he called a “white supremacist”. Rasool had also criticized Elon Musk and JD Vance for backing far-right politicians abroad.
The expulsion is the latest development in the deteriorating relations between the US and South Africa. Tensions have been rising since South Africa pushed for land redistribution, prompting Washington to impose sanctions. The US has accused South Africa of discriminating against white Afrikaners, descendants of Dutch settlers, through its Expropriation Act.
In response to the expulsion, the South African Presidency has urged stakeholders to maintain diplomatic decorum. The Presidency noted the expulsion as “regrettable” and reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to building a mutually beneficial relationship with the US.
