Confidence Magaisa (30), a security guard employed by Hisham Security Company at Mangoro 25 Mine in Zvishavane, was sentenced to six years in prison (with two years suspended on good behavior) for shooting coworker Elton Sibanda (23).
On January 19, Magaisa, armed with a rifle and on duty, confronted Sibanda and colleagues as they attempted to enter the mine compound at night. When the group slowly retreated, an agitated Magaisa fired a shot, striking Sibanda in the back. Sibanda survived after hospitalization and bullet removal. Magaisa, who pleaded not guilty, was convicted of attempted murder following a trial. Police recovered the rifle, which still had one live round. Both men lived and worked at the same mine compound.
